DONATING YOUR GRAIN OR LIVESTOCK
A SMART WAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE NORTHEAST KANSAS FOUNDATION FOR AGING SERVICES
In an effort to provide a variety of gifting opportunities, the Northeast Kansas Foundation for Aging Services has developed the Contributed Commodities Program, designed for grain and livestock contributions. The program allows area farmers and cattlemen to contribute a specific amount of grain, head of cattle, or other commodities and the proceeds will go directly to benefit the Foundation. The Contributed Commodities program is being introduced during the Agency’s “Better Together” Campaign.
Giving in this way provides a number of benefits to ag producers; it supports a very important asset – our Area Agency on Aging! In addition, it reduces the producer’s overall taxable income and since the Agency is a charitable organization, the donation is tax-deductible.
The Northeast Kansas Foundation for Aging Services provides reassurance to farmers, ranchers and their families, that as they and their family face the challenges associated with aging, assistance
through vital programs is always only a short distance away.
ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS REGARDING CHARITABLE GIVING THROUGH AGRICULTURAL COMMODITIES:
What is the advantage of contributing my grain as compared to a cash contribution?
Many times a producer will decide it makes more sense to send a truckload of corn, wheat or other grains to the elevator rather than write a check. Using this program, whether your grain is coming out of the field or the bin, you still create a tax deductible contribution to NEKAAA. As far as the Program goes, give us a call at (785) 742-7152) to discuss the process. If you would like to talk about advantages other than the tax-deductible nature of your gift, we encourage you to talk with your financial and/or legal counsel about the benefits.
I’m thinking about donating by sending some stock to the sales barn. What do I have to do?
Give us a call at (785) 742-7152 and let us know you are interested in donating through this program. We can provide either you or the manager at the barn the documents you need to put the transaction in motion. All you should have to do beyond the documentation is get the stock to the barn and wait for your tax-deductible contribution receipt to come in the mail.
What commodities are acceptable?
Virtually any marketable ag commodity can be used to take advantage of the Contributed Commodities Program.
I recently switched to crops other than what I have been growing. As a result I have several pieces of equipment that I don’t need and they are likely going to end up sitting in the shed. Can I contribute some of that equipment?
The Contributed Commodities Program is focused on crops, livestock and other readily marketable commodities. There are many ways, however, to use other assets to benefit the Agency. Give us a call at (785) 742–7152 and let us know what you are interested in doing. We can usually come up with a plan that will benefit both you and the Northeast Kansas Foundation for Aging Services.
How long is this program going to be available? Can I pledge to use my stock in the coming years? I would like to donate a total that qualifies to establish a Memorial to my parents, as they ranched in Northeast Kansas for decades.
The Contributed Commodities Program will remain in effect for many years to come. You can pledge to use cattle or crops as a way to service your pledge to the Northeast Kansas Foundation for Aging Services and such a commitment will certainly allow you to establish the Memorial and Dedicated Area within the Community Resources Center. Give us a call at (785) 742-7152 and we will work with you to accomplish your wishes.
